Dear members and friends:

The Iberian Society of Ichthyology (SIBIC) organizes a biannual congress in which different aspects of ichthyological studies in both continental and marine environments (ecology, physiology, conservation, fishing, aquaculture...) are addressed. The VIII Iberian Congress of Ichthyology will take place in Santiago de Compostela, 15 -19 June 2020. It will be organized by the Hydrobiology Field Station "Encoro do Con" (EHEC) of the University of Santiago de Compostela. It is from this Centre, dedicated to the study of Iberian continental aquatic biodiversity, that we undertake what we consider to be the privilege and responsibility of organizing SIBIC 2020.

The congress will be an excellent occasion to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the SIBIC, in a city that is a universal destination for pilgrims and whose attraction rests on factors such as the exceptional conservation of its heritage, the quality of the tourism and cultural offers and facilities.  According to UNESCO, Santiago de Compostela is one of the most indisputable heritage assets of Humanity, an ideal city that overflows with history and timelessness, but above all, its vitality and the authenticity and hospitality of its citizens stand out.

From the Organizing Committee we strive to prepare a program that is attractive, interesting and instructive in science and entertaining, as well as lively and enriching in tourism. We hope to be successful in the selection of plenary speakers and that the selected thematic areas will help to make known the latest advances in research on Iberian fish and to show an overview of its current situation in Spain and Portugal.

We have operated as venue of the congress the “Hospedería - Monasterio de San Martiño Pinario”, in the "Praza da Inmaculada", just in front of the north front of the Cathedral of Santiago. The monastery of San Martiño Pinario constitutes the most valuable set of the Galician baroque and has everything necessary, from the technical point of view, for the celebration of the congress.

From the Organizing Committee we are negotiating special prices for attendees within the tourist offer in the area and we have an attractive proposal for excursions and visits to centers related to Ichthyology, which we hope will be satisfactorily materialized.

We trust that the VIII Iberian Congress of Ichthyology meets the expectations of all partners. And we are confident that we will be able to respond correctly to SIBIC's request to choose us as the venue for its celebration.

Therefore, we invite those interested in Ichthyology, from any field of knowledge, to participate in the VIII Iberian Congress SIBIC 2020 and to know and enjoy the attractiveness of Galicia and Santiago de Compostela.
